Boiler display blank?
A blank display almost always means the boiler isn't getting power. These checks find most of the causes without opening anything.
Checks to do
- Check whether lights and other appliances work. If they don't, it's probably a power cut rather than the boiler. Vaillant, Ideal, Viessmann
- Look at your fuse box (consumer unit). If one switch is in a different position from the others, it has tripped. Switch it back on. Ideal, Vaillant, Viessmann
- Check the switch next to the boiler is turned on. Vaillant, Vokera, Viessmann
- When the power comes back, check the boiler's clock and programme. A power cut can reset them. Vaillant, Viessmann
Call a Gas Safe engineer if
- The boiler is getting power but the display is still blank. Worcester Bosch and Ideal both say that means an engineer is needed.
- A switch in the fuse box keeps tripping. Ideal suggests getting an electrician to look for the fault.
- Never remove the boiler's casing to look inside. Worcester Bosch and Vokera both say not to.

The names after each step are the manufacturers whose own guidance backs it. Every boiler is different, so check your manual too.
Common questions
Why is my boiler display blank?
Ideal says a blank display means there's no power to the boiler. Check for a power cut, a tripped switch in your fuse box, and the switch next to the boiler.
What if the boiler has power but still won't come on?
Then the fault is inside the boiler. Worcester Bosch says an engineer is needed if there is a power supply but the boiler still doesn't work.
