Potterton E133: gas supply or ignition fault, often a frozen condensate pipe

Check these first, then call an engineer

The boiler couldn't light. Baxi's fault table, which covers Potterton Assure, lists E133 as a gas supply fault, and Potterton says it is the code you'll see when the condensate pipe has frozen. The display often alternates between E1 and 33.

What you can safely do

  1. Check your gas supply: does your hob work, and does your prepayment meter have credit?
  2. In freezing weather, heat some water that is not boiling and pour it along the full length of the condensate pipe until it thaws. Potterton says this can take up to 30 minutes, and not to hit the pipe to break the ice.
  3. Once it has thawed, reset the boiler.

Call a Gas Safe engineer if

  • The boiler keeps locking out. Baxi says frequent lockouts mean there is a fault and you should contact your installer or service engineer.
  • You smell gas at any point. Leave the property and call 0800 111 999.
