Worcester Bosch EA: flame not detected
The boiler tried to light but didn't detect a flame. Worcester Bosch lists three common causes: no gas supply or low gas pressure, a blocked condensate outlet (often ice in winter), or a blocked flue. Worcester also says a blocked condensate pipe can make the boiler lock out repeatedly with EA and make gurgling sounds.
What you can safely do
- Check your gas supply: does your hob work? If there's no gas, Worcester says to contact your gas supplier.
- If it is safe to do so, check the condensate pipe outlet outside for ice or other blockages. To thaw it, use a hot water bottle, a microwaveable heat pack or a cloth soaked in hot water. Don't use boiling water.
- If it is safe to do so, check the flue outlet outside for damage or blockages.
- Reset the boiler as your user manual describes. After thawing a frozen condensate pipe, Worcester says to wait two or three minutes for the boiler to restart.
Call a Gas Safe engineer if
- EA comes back after these checks.
- You can see damage to the flue.
- You smell gas at any point. Leave the property and call 0800 111 999.
