Glow-worm boiler: how to turn the heating on
Three things have to be on: the heating mode on the boiler, any timer, and your room thermostat or controller. Glow-worm's newer boilers use a mode button; check it isn't set to hot water only. Find your model below.

Glow-worm Betacom 4
The Betacom 4 has a mode button that cycles through Heating + hot water, Heating only, Hot water only and No requirement. If it's on Hot water only or No requirement, the heating won't come on.
- If the display is dark, the boiler may be in standby (Glow-worm says frost protection stays on in standby). Press the on/off button to switch it on.
- Press the mode button repeatedly until the display shows Heating + hot water (or Heating only).
- If your boiler has a built-in timer, check its selection switch: 0 keeps the heating off, I keeps it on, and the clock position follows your timed intervals.
- Set the flow temperature on the boiler with the up and down buttons and confirm. If you have a room controller, Glow-worm says to set the maximum flow temperature on the boiler and the room temperature on the controller.

Glow-worm Ultimate 3
The Ultimate 3 works the same way as the Betacom 4: a mode button with Heating + hot water, Heating only, Hot water only and No requirement.
- Check the gas isolator and the heating flow and return valves under the boiler are open, as Glow-worm's start-up steps say, then press the on/off button.
- Press the mode button until the display shows Heating + hot water (or Heating only).
- If there's a built-in timer, set its switch to the clock position for timed heating or I for always on. 0 keeps the heating off.
- With a room controller, set the maximum flow temperature on the boiler and the room temperature on the controller.

Glow-worm Energy 35 Store
The Energy 35 Store has a separate heating mode button that lights up when heating is on. Its modes include Hot water and frost protection only, which keeps the heating off.
- Press the on/off button. Glow-worm says it takes a few seconds before the boiler is ready.
- Press the heating mode button so it lights up.
- If you have a room thermostat, Glow-worm says to set the boiler's heating flow to its maximum and control the temperature at the thermostat. With an outside temperature sensor, the boiler sets the flow temperature itself.

Heating still not coming on?
- Check your timer or programmer is in an on period and your room thermostat is set above the room temperature.
- Check the pressure gauge. Our pressure checker shows Glow-worm's recommended range and what to do if it's low.
- If the display shows a code, look it up in our Glow-worm code list.
- Switching on for the first time this autumn? See when to turn the heating on, including bleeding the radiators first.
Common questions
Why does my Glow-worm boiler give hot water but no heating?
Check the mode isn't set to Hot water only or No requirement (Betacom 4, Ultimate 3), the heating mode button is lit (Energy 35 Store), and any built-in timer switch isn't on 0. Then check your timer and room controller are asking for heat.
How do I know which Glow-worm boiler I have?
The model name is usually on the front of the boiler or in its user manual, for example Betacom 4 or Ultimate 3.
