Ideal L2: ignition lockout: the boiler failed to light

Check these first, then call an engineer

The boiler tried to light and couldn't, so it has locked out. Ideal's advice, on every model guide we checked, is to start with the condensate pipe, which can block or freeze in winter, then check your gas supply.

What you can safely do

  1. Check the condensate pipe outside. If it is frozen, thaw it with a hot water bottle or by pouring warm water over it, as Ideal advises.
  2. Check your gas supply: do your other gas appliances work? If you have a prepayment meter, check it has credit.
  3. Reset the boiler using the reset button.

Call a Gas Safe engineer if

  • The boiler still shows L2 after these checks.
  • You smell gas at any point. Leave the property and call 0800 111 999.
